Our first stop was Lamai, a tented camp run by Alex Walker's Serian in the northern part of the Serengeti. A paradise in the middle of the wilderness.
We had actually planned a walking safari, but unfortunately this was not possible due to the rainy season that had just begun. Although it did not rain during our time in Lamai, it was not possible to walk in the open steppe of the Serengeti. The grass was simply too high...
Nevertheless, Alex made it possible for us to go on a one-day hike around Camp Lamai. Discovering Africa on foot is a completely different way of travelling - more intense, more direct and closer to nature than from a jeep. We walked past Crossing Number One, the first ford that the zebras and wildebeest cross on their Great Migration.
In Kusini, which also belongs to Alex Walker's Serian, we should also have the opportunity to go fly camping. More about this on the Kusini page.
